Course objectives

After completing this course, students should be able to:

  • Distinguish spoken and written Nepali and use the standard form.
  • Understand the source, class, formation, and meaning of words used across different fields of Nepali writing, and use them in context.
  • Convert information between tables, diagrams, graphs, and charts and prose paragraphs, both ways.
  • Identify Nepali sentence elements and produce sentence-based composition.
  • Identify the structure of a discourse or text.
  • Answer comprehension questions based on realistic texts from various fields of Nepali literature.
  • Take notes and synthesize the main points of a subject.
  • Express independent ideas based on a text, and write various practical documents and reports in prescribed formats.
  • Write substantive, objective essays.
  • Read, appreciate, and respond to prescribed poems, songs/ghazals, essays, stories, a novel, and a play.

Evaluation

External examination — 70 marks. An annual / external examination set per the official specification grid across the units.
